I agree that the backend for snaps being proprietary sucks, but I actually think snaps themselves are pretty useful in server configurations because of the sandboxing and limiting access to system resources. I get the whole argument that it’s doing what flatpak already did yadda yadda, but like… competing standards happens. It’s part of life and always will be.

I work for Meta (Facebook).
For example, the word “protest” will now get your account and activity monitored.
Suddenly Ubuntu doesn’t seem so terrible now, does it??

Yep, I first read about this more than a decade ago so that tracks. Probably a decade or three more before it’s really viable as a solution.

So far, EU OS is a Proof-of-Concept for the deployment of a Fedora-based Linux operating system with a KDE Plasma desktop environment and bootable container technology in a typical public sector organisation. Other organisations with similar requirements or less strict requirements may also learn from this Proof-of-Concept.
I used to argue in high school with this girl who was obsessed with Jane Austen. She said she wished she had lived in that time period and wanted the kind of men from Austen’s novels to woo her.
We were both from dirt poor families and I argued that we would have been dirt poor back then, too. I argued that being dirt poor she would have almost no rights and definitely wouldn’t be crossing paths with the kind of men she pined for, which were generally of the aristocracy. I argued that she didn’t actually want to experience the horrors of rape and being treated like a piece of property. I argued that for the dirt poor like us, that was no past worth returning to at all, ever.
She fucking hated me for arguing any of this. I still feel that I was right to try to disabuse her of these absurd notions that her life would have somehow been better back then. Dipshits who think they’d magically be born into aristocracy when they certainly weren’t born into it now.

Snot Flickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zoneto Privacy@lemmy.ml•Is there a way to watch "age-restricted" videos on youtube?English181·25 days agoI haven’t used yt-dlp in a hot minute, but it used to have a simple bypass for age-restricted videos that didn’t need browser cookies. Anyone know if that still works?

Snot Flickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zoneto Technology@lemmy.ml•BDS calls for Boycott of Microsoft Game Pass, Minecraft, New XBox ConsolesEnglish201·27 days agoI love it when I’m already technically boycotting because I just hated all that shit to begin with.
The only real loss is Minecraft, which Microsoft has been slowly enshittifying anyway. Java Edition is the redheaded stepchild now.
PlayStation controllers have way better build quality than Xbox controllers. I hope Valve brings back Steam controllers.
Activision, Bethesda and Blizzard haven’t made good games in over a decade.
I never used GamePass because I like actually having ownership over my games and developers being paid properly.
I live Linux full time now because Windows is trash.

That’s part of why I use Xubuntu/Kubuntu mainly and Lubuntu for real low end stuff. Straight vanilla Ubuntu is… not super appealing. Ubuntu server that’s just CLI/headless though, that’s pretty tits, imho.
