Big boomer energy. At 7 in 1989 I had an NES and also did this with a box fan. Just yesterday, I saw my 7 year old son, who now has access to a Switch, Xbox 360, PS2, SNES, and NES, do this with a box fan.

Well, we could wander around all day long and no one cared all that much. Now kids have airtags up their rears so parents know their exact coordinates every 5 minutes…

It’s not all the parents fault, leaving kids unattended under all contexts has been sort of criminalised. Letting your kids play unsupervised outside or even letting them walk to school by themselves could get CPS called on you. I had a friend who had to stop letting her 10 year old walk to the bus stop to take the bus to school, because a “concerned neighbour” called CPS, it was a ten minute walk.

Honest question from an older person who never had a box fan: how did you play with them?

I will reveal to you an arcane forbidden technique. Hold your hand in front of your face. Though check first to see if there is anyone mischievous about. Palm towards you, fingers pressed together. Close to your face, preferably less than 5cm or so away. Then wave your hand as fast as you can while cursing.

Dude, a box fan was a wicked good time! Weliked to kick it up a notch and throw flour in there, pennies etc. Hilarious!
